Between one and two Cantabrians a day go to the Emergency Department for suicidal behaviors, according to Valdecilla's head of Psychiatry.


The head of the Psychiatry Service of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, Jesús Artal, has warned that, in Cantabria, between one or two people a day go to the emergency department for behaviors related to suicide, and this, despite the fact that the community is below average in this type of case.

This has been indicated in an interview disseminated by the College of Physicians of Cantabria on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, October 10, in which he explained that, although the community is among the four With fewer suicide rates, "it is the leading cause of death in young people." With these data, he considers that his approach has to be "very important in the health field".

He explained that, in the health area of Santander, there has been a program since 2016 with a specific consultation of care for people at high risk of suicide, intensive consultation that responds between 24 and 72 hours.
