Michael Kanan starts playing the piano at age 7. During his studies at Boston University, he plays with jazz greats such as Tal Farlow, Lee Konitz, Al Cohn or Alan Dawson. In 1991 he moved to New York to study with the pianist Sal Mosca, a specialist in Tristano. Established in that city, he plays and records with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner and Jorge Rossy, among others, and develops a growing reputation as a vocal accompanist.

In 1996, he joined the band of the legendary singer Jimmy Scott, with which he toured the USA, Europe and Japan and with which he recorded four albums. In 2001, he became the accompanist and arranger of one of the most famous vocalists of today, Jane Monheit. With the latter he has toured around the world, recorded several CDs and DVDs, and made many television appearances, including the famous David Letterman and Conan O'Brien programs.

For the occasion he is accompanied by bassist Horacio Fumero (legendary double bass player by Tete Montoliu for almost two decades) and drummer Guillem Arnedo.
