The portraits of Francis Bacon, Juan Gris, Francisco Gutiérrez Cossío, José Gutiérrez Solana, Henri Matisse, Isidre Nonell, Joaquín Sorolla and Daniel Vázquez Díaz present some common features: maximum expression through color and light and use of the figure as a medium of communication and conductive thread. Portraits: essence and expression permanently brings together eight portraits made by important figures of art of the twentieth century, from the collection of Jaime Botín, who will discover some of the key figures of modern art.

Mª José Salazar, art historian, curator, researcher, specialized in contemporary art, authored the reasoned catalog of drawing by José Gutiérrez Solana and her exhibition at the Botín Foundation (2013). This visit to the exhibition Portraits: essence and expression will allow us to deepen the figure of José Gutiérrez Solana and especially in his role as a portraitist.
